Another Painting Machine 1999
Performance
APM was my first approach to the issue of artistic machines. Trying to focus my ideas about machines as humans and humans as machines, I found in art a field that, while having some references in the animal world, seems exclusive of this superior intelligence that we, humans, attribute to ourselves. The title makes reference to other painting machines ranging from artistic ones such as Metamatic nº 10 by J. Tinguely to industrials of any kind.
The first version was composed of four machines:
-"Syncro Laveur"
-Two walking robots: a six legged one, equipped with brushes, and an eight legged one with markers.
-"Talmus Taiwan", bass player, first of the music robots series.
During the 20 minute performance the machines paint a stage-canvas of 5 x 4 meters while the robot musician plays electroacoustic music.
Control was through a relay card and a computer set in a random mode.
This was premiered in the Diputación de Huelva gallery (Spain) and awarded in the 2000 edition of the Performa Festival Madrid.
